Wishy-Washy Christians

You can’t pick and choose what to take from the Bible.
It’s either absolute or obsolete.
It’s either truth or lie.
It can’t be right on some things and wrong on others.
It’s either always right, or always wrong.
It’s either God’s Word or not.
There are absolute truths. There are no grey areas with God.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under
heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.

That’s it. Did you read those three verses? Did your understand them?
Now, either they are true or false. Either people cannot get to Heaven without Christ or the Bible is false. Now you have to pick which one; you can’t have both. You can’t serve two masters. Either God is absolutely true and His Word is His Word and perfect, or His Word is not true and it’s all lies, and you cannot know God. Now, if you are lost, you’re going to hate this because that means you have to accept some of what you see as “bad” parts of God’s Character, like His righeousness, and Holiness, and Judgement, and Wrath, and Vengenance, and Jealous, and Perfect. He is not just loving! He is not just mercy! He is not just forgiving! He is all of these and so much more!

I talked with a man who says he is a Christian, but ultimately believed the Bible couldn’t be trusted. There were two kids on the bus ride to Austin talking about God, and they ask the same old question, “Will a Buddhist go to Hell, will a muslim, will a pagan…etc.” So I speak up and say, “The main problem isn’t that they’re not Christian, but that they’re sinners, and God must judge them.” I quoted I am the way, the life, etc. and then the “Christian” sitting behind me started debating with me about how we can’t trust that that’s what that verse means because of age, translation, etc. I have to disagree. God knows exactly what He’s doing. God did exactly as He wanted and gave us His perfect Word.
Poor man, I pray he’s really saved and just misled for a time, but I don’t know. I haven’t had a chance to talk to him about this yet, but I plan to, God willing.

  1. Excellent points. I’ve got 97 more verses to back up your position if you need them (start here – http://www.4simpsons.com/Jesus%20is%20the%20way.htm )

The “Christian” who denied the truth of the exclusivity of Jesus is either not a Christian or he is saved and confused. Even expert skeptics will concede that we know what the original writings of the Bible said with 99.5% accuracy, and 100% with doctrines like this. So for a Christian to hold any other view is ridiculous.

  2. This has been on my heart lately as well. Jesus even says the path to hell is wide, but the path to heaven is narrow. I am not judging, but sincerrely concerned..for everyone. My own son, wont read the bible, but will read “Christian fiction” and I can’t seem to make him understand it’s not the same or “good enough” though I do trust God is working in his life, because a month ago, he wouldnt even touch that.

I had a gentleman send me a e-mail on this very subject last night. unfortunately I think a lot of Christians accept Christ, as their savior and thats it…. “you can save me, but thats as far as you can come” after all He’s done for us, we should be like John the Baptist, and in everything point to Him. “Wow, you’re smart, No, I am not, but Christ in me is smart”, “Well you certainly know the Word, No – again it’s Christ within me reminding me of the Word. not me” etc…

The Bible is not subject to opinion. It says what God wants it to say… and we must pray before we even open the book for guidance into HIS will. our will is nothing.

  3. ¡Our will is important! ! I think I was like your son and I am still working on becoming more Christ-like. I just find the Bible very boring & I think that is why your son won’t read it. I love to read Christian women’s magazines to help me on my narrow path. It’s good to know that there are other Christians around istead of having the utter hopelessness of Elijah. But I also found that not all Christians belive the same way. For example, some Christians think it’s okay to have tatoos and some think it isn’t. It doesn’t matter what they think, because we have to know what the Bible says. In my magazine there was a whole page on tatoos–that only had TWO verses! the rest was simply the writer’s opinon. Anyway, I have gone through some hard times in the past and I have learned that the only way to find the truth is to read the Bible.
P.S. I think there is not enough displeship in the church. I think especially youth groups do not read the Bible together enough.

  4. I think is is kind of sad that there are christians in this world who don’t read the Bible because ” it is boring”. The Bible has everything from the most gruesome war seen to the trashest romance novel to the most beautiful reason for our very existence, the gospel of Jesus Christ.
I was not raised a christian or in church, so when God called me to him and opened my eyes to the gospel and saved my wretched soul I wanted to know everything I could about God and my Savior and one way to do that is to dig into his word. JESUS IS THE WORD!
If you don’t remind yourself of the gospel everyday you can start to loss hope and peace and love.
Read it! it is interesting and it will help you live a life worthy of Christ.
